Closest Airport to Walt Disney World: Orlando MCO vs Tampa TPA
The closest airport to Walt Disney World is Orlando International (MCO), about 16 miles away in a straight line. When Tampa or Sanford make sense,

The closest major airport to Walt Disney World is Orlando International (MCO), about 16 miles (27 km) in a straight line from Magic Kingdom. For most visitors it is also the right answer. It has the most flights and the most airlines, and it is the closest airport and usually the shortest trip to the parks. Tampa International (TPA), about 65 miles away in a straight line, is the main alternative. It is worth considering only when the fare savings clearly cover the longer, costlier ground trip.
Closest airport to Walt Disney World: MCO is the short answer
Walt Disney World is not in the city of Orlando. It sits southwest of the city, around Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista. MCO wins on distance for a simple reason. It is about 16 miles from Magic Kingdom in a straight line, and the next-closest major airport, Tampa, is about 65.
MCO is also one of the busiest airports in the country. It has nonstop service from most large US cities and many international ones. More competition on a route usually means more flight times to choose from and, often, better fares. Our guide How airfares are actually priced explains how that works.
The distances in this article are measured from Magic Kingdom. Disney World is a large property, so EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and the resort hotels are a few miles closer to or farther from each airport. The difference is small enough that the ranking stays the same.
Closest airports to Walt Disney World compared
These are straight-line ("as the crow flies") distances from Magic Kingdom. Road distance is always longer, sometimes by a lot.
| Airport | Straight-line distance | Airline service | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orlando International (MCO) | 16 mi / 27 km | Major airport, extensive scheduled service | Almost everyone |
| Tampa International (TPA) | 65 mi / 105 km | Major airport, extensive scheduled service | Combining Disney with Florida's Gulf Coast, or when Tampa fares are much cheaper |
| Fort Lauderdale (FLL) | 185 mi / 297 km | Major airport, extensive scheduled service | Multi-stop Florida trips or South Florida cruises |
| Miami International (MIA) | 198 mi / 318 km | Major airport, extensive scheduled service | Multi-stop trips that start or end in Miami |
Fort Lauderdale and Miami are in the table only because people ask about them. At roughly 185 to 200 miles in a straight line, both are a long drive from the parks. A cheaper fare into South Florida rarely makes sense for a Disney-only trip.

What about Orlando Sanford (SFB) and smaller airports?
Orlando Sanford International (SFB) is another airport with "Orlando" in its name. Orlando Melbourne International (MLB) and Orlando Executive also carry the name. Sanford is the one travelers most often confuse with MCO. It sits north of Orlando, while Disney World is southwest of the city, so it is farther from the parks than MCO. We don't give a distance for Sanford here. Check a mapping app for the road distance and drive time from SFB to your hotel before you book.
Sanford is served mostly by low-cost and leisure airlines. Many of their routes are seasonal or run only a few days a week. It can be a good deal if your home airport happens to have a nonstop there. Check the schedule for your actual dates before you plan around it, and price the longer ground trip.
There are also smaller general-aviation airports in the Orlando and Kissimmee area. These mostly handle private planes and flight training, not scheduled airline flights. Unless you are flying privately, they are not an option.
Getting from MCO to the parks
Road distance from MCO to the Disney area is longer than the 16-mile straight line. Drive time depends heavily on the time of day and on Orlando's toll roads. Before you land, check a mapping app for the time you expect to arrive.
The common options are:
- Rental car. All the major companies operate at MCO. Many of the fastest routes use toll roads, so ask the rental company how it charges for tolls. Some programs add a daily fee on top of the tolls themselves. Also budget for overnight parking at your hotel, since many Disney-area hotels charge for it.
- Rideshare and taxi. Uber, Lyft and taxis pick up at marked zones outside the terminals. Fares rise at busy times, and a family with a lot of luggage may need a larger vehicle.
- Shared shuttle. Disney no longer runs a free airport bus (Magical Express has ended). Paid shuttle services operate between MCO and the Disney-area hotels. Check the operator's website for current prices, schedules and booking rules.
- Private car service. This is a pre-booked driver, and some companies will add a grocery stop on the way. It costs more, but it can be worth it for a large group or a late-night arrival.

When Tampa is worth it instead
Tampa is a good airport, and smaller than MCO. The catch is the ground trip. It is roughly four times the straight-line distance of MCO, and the drive along I-4 toward Orlando is known for heavy traffic. Plan on a long drive, and confirm the current time on a map app rather than trusting a rule of thumb.
A rental car is the usual choice from Tampa. Shuttles and buses from TPA to the Disney area exist, but check the operator's site for current routes, prices and schedules before you count on one.
Here is a simple way to decide. Tampa makes sense when the total fare savings for your whole group are larger than the extra cost of getting from Tampa to Disney and back. That extra cost includes a longer rideshare or shuttle, or extra fuel and tolls in a rental car. It also costs you time, which matters most if you land in the afternoon and lose an evening in the parks.
Tampa also wins when Disney is only part of the trip. If you are adding a few days on the Gulf Coast beaches around Tampa, Clearwater or St. Petersburg, flying into Tampa often fits the route naturally.
To compare fares, try the "Cheapest dates" mode in /plan. Check the same route into both MCO and TPA. The prices there are recent cached fares, not live quotes, so confirm the price on the airline's site before you book. For timing, see When to book flights.
Combining Disney World with a cruise
Many families pair a Disney stay with a cruise from Port Canaveral, which is on the Atlantic coast east of Orlando. MCO usually works well for both, and you can often fly into one airport and out of the same one. Our guide Closest Airport to Port Canaveral: MCO vs MLB vs SFB Compared covers the port side of the trip.
If the cruise comes first, give yourself a buffer. Fly In the Day Before a Cruise: Why and How Early Is Enough explains why. Our sister site, bestcruising.com, books cruises and packages through human agents by phone and email. It does not sell flights.
Frequently asked questions
Is Orlando Sanford closer to Disney World than Orlando International?
No. Sanford is north of Orlando, and Disney World is southwest of the city. Orlando International (MCO) is the closer airport, and it has far more flights.
Is there a free shuttle from MCO to Disney World?
Not from Disney itself. Disney no longer runs a free airport bus (Magical Express has ended). Paid shuttles, rideshares, taxis and rental cars are the usual options now. Check each operator's site for current prices.
Should I fly into Tampa to save money on a Disney trip?
Only if the savings for your whole group clearly beat the extra cost and time of the longer ground trip. It is about 65 miles in a straight line, compared with 16 from MCO. For a Disney-only trip, MCO is usually the better value once you count the drive.
