Singapore Changi Layover: How Long to See Jewel (2026)

A Singapore Changi layover needs about 4 hours to see Jewel; Jewel says 5. How immigration, the SG Arrival Card and gate security affect your timing.

To see Jewel on a Singapore Changi layover, plan on a layover of at least 4 hours in total. That's the practical minimum, and it leaves you about 1 hour 45 minutes inside Jewel. Jewel's own advice is 5 hours to visit comfortably.

The reason it takes so long is that Jewel is outside the transit area. You have to clear Singapore immigration to get in, then clear it again and pass security at your gate to get back. If your layover is under 4 hours, stay airside. Changi's transit areas have plenty to fill the time.

All figures below are as of October 2026. Opening hours, prices and transfer rules change, so re-check at changiairport.com, jewelchangiairport.com and ica.gov.sg before you fly.

Why Jewel takes longer than it looks on the map

Airports have two sides. Airside is the secure area past passport control, where transit passengers normally stay. Landside is the public side, open to anyone. Jewel is landside. It sits between Terminals 2 and 3 and connects directly to Terminal 1. Changi states plainly that "transit passengers must clear arrival immigration to visit Jewel."

So a Jewel visit is really a short entry into Singapore:

  1. Get off your plane.
  2. Clear arrival immigration.
  3. Walk to Jewel.
  4. Walk back to your departure terminal.
  5. Clear departure immigration.
  6. Get to your gate and go through security there.

None of these steps is slow on a normal day. Immigration with the automated lanes is often reported at 5–15 minutes, though that isn't an official figure and queues vary. Six steps still add up, and a single slow queue can eat your margin.

How long a Changi layover needs for Jewel

Total layoverWhat's realistic
Under 4 hoursStay airside: gardens, transit hotels, the T1 pool
4–5 hoursA quick Jewel visit (about 1h45 to 2h45 inside): the Rain Vortex and a meal
5–5.5 hoursJewel's "comfortable" amount: time for Canopy Park as well
5.5–24 hoursEligible for the Free Singapore Tour into the city
Roughly 6+ hoursOur rule of thumb for an independent trip downtown

Worked example (timing, per traveler): Say your layover is 4 hours, the practical minimum.

  • Allow 45 minutes from landing to walking into Jewel. That covers getting off the plane, immigration and the walk.
  • Leave Jewel 90 minutes before your departure time. That covers departure immigration, getting to your gate, and gate screening before boarding starts.
  • Time in Jewel is 4 hours minus 45 minutes minus 90 minutes. That is 240 − 45 − 90 = 105 minutes, or 1 hour 45 minutes.

The rule in words: your time in Jewel is your layover minus about 2¼ hours. Every extra hour of layover is an extra hour in Jewel, so a 5-hour layover gives you about 2 hours 45 minutes.

The 45-minute and 90-minute cushions are our own planning assumptions, not official Changi figures. They suit a typical connection between T1, T2 and T3. If you depart from Terminal 4 or a far-off gate, 90 minutes is not generous. We'd add at least 30 minutes in those cases.

Measure from your actual landing time, not the scheduled one. If your inbound flight arrives an hour late, a 5-hour layover becomes a 4-hour one. Check the arriving flight on our flight status page before you commit. See how to find the inbound aircraft and predict delays.

What to do in Jewel, and what fits

  • Rain Vortex. A 40-meter indoor waterfall falling through seven stories, running daily 10:00–22:00. The Light & Music Showcase plays at 20:00 and 21:00 Monday to Thursday. On Friday to Sunday, the eve of public holidays and public holidays, it plays at 20:00, 21:00 and 22:00.
  • Canopy Park (Level 5). SGD 8 standard admission for adults and children. It includes the Discovery Slides, Foggy Bowls, Petal Garden and Topiary Walk. It's open Monday to Thursday 10:00–21:00 and Friday to Sunday, the eve of public holidays and public holidays 10:00–22:00. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
  • Paid add-ons. Canopy Park also has a hedge maze, a mirror maze, and bouncing and walking nets. These are reportedly around SGD 10–16 each, but that comes from a non-official source, so check prices on jewelchangiairport.com.

With about 1h45 (a 4-hour layover): see the Rain Vortex, have a meal, and head back. Skip paid attractions unless you're happy to rush.

With about 2h45 (a 5-hour layover): add Canopy Park, or time your visit around a light show if you're there in the evening.

Watch the clock on late layovers. The Rain Vortex operates 10:00–22:00. Canopy Park closes at 21:00 Monday to Thursday and at 22:00 Friday to Sunday, on the eve of public holidays and on public holidays. Check shop and restaurant hours on jewelchangiairport.com.

Before you leave the transit area: papers and bags

Visa. US citizens need no visa for stays of 90 days or less. Your passport should be valid for six months beyond departure and have one blank page. Use our passport-validity checker if you're close to that limit, and see the six-month passport rule, explained.

Other nationalities differ. Holders of ordinary Indian passports need a Singapore visa unless they qualify for the 96-hour Visa-Free Transit Facility. To use it, you must:

  • be in air transit to or from a third country,
  • hold a valid visa or long-term pass (valid for at least a month) for Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the UK or the US, and
  • have an onward air, ferry or cruise ticket leaving Singapore within 96 hours.

The 96 hours cannot be extended. Look up your own passport with our entry-requirements tool and confirm on ica.gov.sg.

SG Arrival Card. Everyone who clears immigration needs an SG Arrival Card (SGAC), which includes an electronic health declaration. Children need their own. The card is free. Submit it no more than 3 days before arrival, counting the arrival day. It is only available through the official ICA SGAC e-Service or the MyICA app. If you stay airside the whole time, you don't need one.

Bags. If your checked bags are through-checked, meaning tagged to your final destination, they stay in the airport system and you don't touch them. If you're on separate tickets, you may have to collect and re-check them, which changes the whole calculation. See missed connections on separate tickets. For baggage allowances and lost-bag help, see our travel services.

For carry-on items, Jewel has paid baggage storage on Level 1. Canopy Park lockers take only small items.

Getting to Jewel from each terminal

Arriving atRoute to Jewel
T1Jewel's north entrance joins the T1 Arrival Hall, Level 1
T25–10 minute walk via the Level 3 link bridge near the MRT station
T35–10 minute walk via the link bridge from Departure Hall Level 2 (near Crowne Plaza), or free shuttle from Departure Door 8
T4Free shuttle bus to Jewel/T1

Terminal 4 is the awkward one. It's linked by bus, not the Skytrain. Once you've cleared immigration, you use the public-area shuttle. It runs every 5–9 minutes from 06:00 to midnight, then loops every 19 minutes overnight. Changi doesn't give a journey time for it, so check changiairport.com. There's also a transit-area shuttle, which runs about every 8 minutes with a 10–18 minute ride. Changi estimates about 19 minutes from T4 to T1 and 12 minutes from T4 to T2 or T3 on that shuttle, but you can only use it if your itinerary is through-checked. Either way, budget the bus ride in both directions.

Overnight changes. From 6 October 2026, the free Skytrain between T1, T2 and T3 stops running from 00:00 to 05:00. Transit passengers can still walk between T1 and T3 on the travellators (moving walkways) in the departure transit areas.

Getting back: immigration, then security at the gate

This is the part people misjudge. Changi doesn't have a central security checkpoint. You clear departure immigration, walk to your gate, and the screening happens there, at the entrance to the gate holding room. That means there's no central security line on the way back. Screening at the gate can still build a queue as boarding approaches, though. The gate opens for screening well before boarding, so respect the posted time.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Boarding usually starts 40–60 minutes before departure. That's a general guide from a non-official source, so check the boarding time on your boarding pass. Aim to be at the gate before that, not at departure time.
  • Gates close firmly. Scoot, for example, is reported to close gates 15 minutes before departure. Check your own airline's rule.
  • Duty-free liquids on flights to Australia. Liquids over 100 ml bought on an earlier flight are taken away at the Singapore gate, even in a sealed bag. Buy at Changi for gate delivery instead.
  • Check your onward flight before heading back. Look up the departure time and gate on our flight status page. A delay gives you slack, but a gate change can add a terminal transfer. If the status wording is unclear, see how to read flight status.
  • Early check-in at Jewel. Jewel offers early check-in, which asks you to check in at least 2 hours before departure. Check jewelchangiairport.com to see whether your airline takes part.

If your layover is too short, or long enough for the city

Under 4 hours: stay airside. You won't need immigration or an SGAC, and Changi's transit areas are genuinely good:

  • Butterfly Garden (T3, Levels 2 and 3). Open 24 hours, with over 1,000 butterflies. No price is listed, so it appears to be free, but confirm locally.
  • Rooftop pool and jacuzzi (T1, near the D gates). Open 10:00–22:00. It costs SGD 23++ per adult and is free for Changi Transit Hotel guests. The "++" means service charge and tax are added on top.
  • Transit hotels. Changi Transit Hotel has airside locations in T1 (near Gate D40) and T3 (next to the Movie Theatre). Both are open 24 hours with flexible stays. In T2, the Ambassador Transit Hotel changes operator to Changi Transit Hotel from 3 November 2026.

The YOTELAIR in Jewel is landside. Using it means clearing immigration, and day cabins have a 4-hour minimum.

5.5–24 hours: consider the Free Singapore Tour. These 2.5-hour guided tours into the city cost nothing. The schedule as of October 2026, with the latest time to report in brackets:

TourTimes (report by)
Heritage & Culture10:00–12:30 (08:30)
City Sights12:00–14:30 (10:30); 18:00–20:30 (16:30)
Singapore River & Marina Bay Sands13:00–15:30 (11:30); 16:00–18:30 (14:30)
Sentosa Discovery15:00–17:30 (13:30); 19:00–21:30 (17:30)

Rules to know:

  • Register before clearing immigration. Counters are in the Departure Transit Hall, Level 2, in T2 near Gate F50 and T3 near Gates A1–A8. They're open 08:00–19:00.
  • Arriving at T1? Changi lists no T1 counter, so check changiairport.com for current registration points. Otherwise, stay airside and take the Skytrain to T2 or T3, or walk the travellators to T3.
  • Bring your documents. You'll need your passport, boarding passes, booking confirmation and any visa you need.
  • Some passports need a visa. Indian and Pakistani passport holders need a valid Singapore visa to join. Changi doesn't say whether entry under the 96-hour Visa-Free Transit Facility counts, so check your eligibility at the tour counter (or with ICA) before you rely on the tour.
  • Report early. Be at the counter at least 90 minutes before the tour starts.
  • One entry and exit only. You may clear immigration once in each direction.
  • Booking. You can pre-book one itinerary up to 50 days ahead. Walk-ins depend on available seats.
  • Bag fees. Storage fees apply for bulky items, alcohol and duty-free.
  • Allow time to get back. A non-official guide suggests budgeting 45–60 minutes each way on top of the tour for immigration and security; Changi doesn't publish a figure. On the way back we'd use the same 90-minute cushion we suggest for leaving Jewel, because you still have departure immigration, the walk to your gate and gate screening before boarding starts.

Going into the city on your own takes more planning. Our rule of thumb is a layover of about 6 hours or more. The MRT (Singapore's metro) runs from Changi Airport station via Tanah Merah or Expo and takes roughly 30–40 minutes to the center. The first train is at 05:31 Monday to Saturday (05:59 on Sundays and public holidays), and the last train toward the city leaves at 23:18. A taxi takes about 30 minutes and typically costs SGD 25–45 on the meter. On top of that is an airport surcharge of SGD 8 (17:00–23:59) or SGD 6 at other times, plus time-of-day surcharges such as 50% from midnight to 05:59.

Worked example (independent trip): Say your layover is 6 hours, and you use the same cushions as the Jewel example.

  • Allow 45 minutes from landing to leaving the airport.
  • Allow 40 minutes on the MRT each way, the top of the 30–40 minute range.
  • Be back at the airport 90 minutes before departure.
  • Time in the city is 360 − 45 − 40 − 40 − 90 = 145 minutes, or about 2½ hours.

That's about the same as the tour's 2.5 hours. The difference is that nobody keeps you on schedule, so you have to time your own trip back.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Jewel without going through immigration?

No. Jewel is in the public area, and Changi requires transit passengers to clear arrival immigration to get there. That's why you need an SG Arrival Card and, depending on your passport, possibly a visa.

Is 3 hours enough for Jewel at Changi?

For most people, no. After allowing about 45 minutes to get in and leaving Jewel 90 minutes before departure (our planning assumptions), a 3-hour layover leaves only about 45 minutes inside. We treat 4 hours in total as the practical minimum, which gives you about 1 hour 45 minutes in Jewel. Jewel itself recommends 5 hours for a comfortable visit.

Do I need a visa to visit Jewel?

It depends on your passport, because visiting Jewel means entering Singapore. US citizens don't need one for stays of up to 90 days. Holders of ordinary Indian passports do, unless they qualify for the 96-hour Visa-Free Transit Facility. Check your nationality with our entry-requirements tool and confirm on ica.gov.sg.

Can I leave bags while I visit Jewel?

Yes. Jewel has paid baggage storage on Level 1. The lockers in Canopy Park only take small items, so use Level 1 for anything bigger than a small bag.

Do I need to collect my checked bags to visit Jewel?

Not if they're through-checked to your final destination. They stay in the system while you're out. On separate tickets you may need to collect and re-check them, so allow considerably more time or stay airside.
